We lined up, arm in arm, 10 people wide, and marched together into Marina Green. We were greeted by family and friends there to cheer us on and congratulate us for our victory. We celebrated together.
First came the 1,400 walkers. Then our beloved crew filed in as we cheered and screamed.
The honor guards filed on stage, carrying the memorial flags. This is one of the most touching moments in the ceremony. For most of the walkers and the people gathered there, the flags represent people, loved ones, whose lives were touched by breast cancer. Tears began to flow. There were 4 honor guards standing on the front of the stage. Their flags read, “My Partner”, “Myself”, “My Friend” and “My Daughter.” As the crowd cheered, those honored by the flags joined them – partner, friend and daughter. The tears flowed freely all around.
Next we honored the survivors. Each walker removed one shoe and held it high in salute to those who fought the battle of breast cancer.
The flag was raised. It read, “A World Without Breast Cancer.”
